We think you’ll feel pretty relaxed the moment you walk through the doors at Macdonald Monchique Resort & Spa. Surrounded by lush, green forests, mountainous woodlands and blue sky stretching as far as the eye can see, it’s the perfect place to unwind and recharge your batteries. But if you need a little help getting there – and let’s face it, we could all do with a little pampering from time to time – then a visit to our Sensorial Spa is an absolute must.
With its entrance tucked away in a corner of the main building, this luxury spa offers a plethora of indulgent facilities and treatments in beautiful natural surroundings.
Beyond the stylish reception area, which features generous shopping areas for both ESPA and Monchique Cosmetics products, you’ll find a warmly lit communal space, featuring a thermal spa area (€35 for two hours for residents/€40 for non-residents), that’s designed to enhance all the senses.
Calm-inducing amenities include a Himalayan salt wall sauna, an Igloo ice cave, a Fonte de Vida (‘source of life’) aroma cabin, rain and storm showers, foot baths and a Hammam steam room. There’s also a tranquil indoor hydro pool featuring whirlpool jets, heated stone beds and floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the beautiful Monchique mountains.
A softly lit corridor – with bark-effect walls and wooden furnishings – reflects the resort’s surrounding forests, and leads to eight beautifully appointed treatment rooms, where a wide variety of indulgent treatments are available, from both ESPA and Monchique Cosmetics.
British luxury spa brand ESPA is a pioneer in the science of natural beauty. Its award-winning skincare range brings together potent natural ingredients with age-defying technology, and treatments range from bespoke facials – with an in-depth consultation and skin analysis – to aromatherapy massage and the ESPA ‘Hero’ treatment – a stress-busting 85-minute back, face and scalp massage. You can even upgrade your treatment to include body exfoliation, eye treatments or invigorating leg treatments.
For a truly immersive Monchique experience, you can opt for one of the treatments from Monchique Cosmetics, developed especially for Sensorial Spa. These include the Caldas Cleansing Ritual, a deep-cleansing, detoxifying and nourishing treatment, featuring natural aromas from the Monchique mountains.
Natural spring water, extracted from deep underground sources in Caldas de Monchique is rich in minerals and trace elements, and makes the perfect base for Monchique Cosmetics’ enriching product range. The products also feature ingredients from plants, flowers and fruits from the region, including medronho, a unique red fruit grown only in the Monchique mountains that’s rich in antioxidants.
Other signature treatments at the spa include The Monchique Experience facial, a 30 or 60-minute treatment to repair and hydrate skin, tailored to your age and skin type, and the soothing Monchique Honey Ritual, a 60-minute targeted ritual that leaves skin luxuriously soft and hydrated. After your treatment, you can curl up and rest in one of our deep or light relaxation rooms.
If you’re visiting the spa with a loved one then why not upgrade to the VIP couples suite, where you can enjoy champagne and treatments in the privacy of your own suite, featuring a private sauna and an outdoor hot tub. For something a bit different, try the All About Us treatment for two people, which takes place in a private steam room and involves applying a body polish, and a mineralised Moroccan clay body mask to your partner’s face, body and hair.
Hotel residents and non-residents alike can prolong their spa experience by choosing from a range of spa packages, such as Pamper Me: the ESPA ‘Hero’ treatment followed by two hours in the thermal suites and a light lunch. New packages will be available each season, so keep an eye on our website for more details.
Whatever treatment or package you opt for, you’re sure to have a unique sensory experience at Sensorial Spa, a relaxing haven that perfectly complements and incorporates the natural beauty and resources of this special region.
